HIGH CAFFEINE TEA VS COFFEE COFFEE PROVIDES A BIG HIT OF CAFFEINE - ALBEIT NOT AS MUCH AS ZEST TEA - SO WHY DOES THE ENERGY FEEL SO DIFFERENT? TEA HAS SOME UNIQUE PROPERTIES THAT MAKE IT THE BEST CHOICE FOR ENERGY JUNKIES, LATE NIGHTERS, AND GOAL-GETTERS.
CALM AND ALERT The big difference between high caffeine teas and coffee drinks, is the L-Theanine. This is an awesome amino acid that isn’t found in coffee beans, but is found in tea leaves. Caffeine brings energy and that wide-awake feeling, while L-Theanine brings waves of calm, alertness and focus. They’re the yin and yang you need in the morning for balance!
SMOOTH AND SUSTAINED ENERGY BOOST L-Theanine in caffeinated teas actually monitors and sustains the caffeine. As a result, you get a smoother energy boost throughout the day that gradually lowers you back down to normal energy levels. Caffeine without this amino acid leads to jitters and the inevitable mid-afternoon crash.
NATURALLY SWEET AND HEALTHY To boost your health further, we use a plant-powered formula at Zest Tea. Non-GMO ingredients and natural tea extract bump the caffeine, rather than sugar and artificial flavorings to give your day a boost.

FAQ
Which tea is highest in caffeine?
From the Camellia sinensis plant, black tea and matcha typically have the highest caffeine content, but it's still not as much caffeine as coffee. For a better energy boost, high caffeine teas contain much more caffeine with extra L-Theanine too.
What tea has the same caffeine as coffee?
There's around 96 milligrams of caffeine in a cup of coffee, which is roughly equivalent to two large black teas. An easier way to get more caffeine than coffee is to drink Zest Tea, with 150 milligrams of caffeine per cup.
What is the best tea to replace coffee?
A high caffeine tea with plenty of L-Theanine is a great alternative for coffee, to provide energy and sustain energy levels. We recommend our Spicy Masala Chai as a morning coffee replacement - the smooth, rich flavor of chai with a tasty blend of spices is great with or without milk.If you prefer an iced coffee, take a look at our ready-to-drink range.
Which teas come from the tea plant?
The Camellia sinensis plant is used to create numerous tea types with different caffeine levels, including black teas, white tea, green tea, oolong tea, purple tea, pu-erh tea and more. However, the plant doesn't produce herbal teas, yerba mate, and fruit teas - which are better defined as infusions rather than teas.
Which black tea has the most caffeine?
Our four black blends each contain 150mg of caffeine per cup, so they're quite strong! Choose from Earl Grey, Blue Lady, Cinnamon Apple, and Spicy Masala Chai. You can also find our ready-to-drink iced teas with up to 150mg of caffeine. They're also low in sugar or sugar free.
Is oolong tea highly caffeinated tea?
The highest caffeine teas have caffeine levels higher than coffee... but that's because we harness plant-powered energy through additional tea extract. Standard teas, including oolong teas, white tea, black tea and Japanese green teas, have lower levels. Oolong tea has around 30mg of caffeine, however it's hard to pinpoint an average as 'oolong' contains such a diverse range of teas.Other tea types, like matcha tea, are easier to calculate as you consume 100% of the caffeine in the tea leaves. Similarly, caffeine-free teas like rooibos teas are also easy to calculate - 0mg of caffeine!
Is loose leaf tea higher in caffeine than tea bags?
The caffeine content really depends on the brand. A cup of tea made with Zest tea will contain the same milligrams of caffeine whether you use a tea bag or spoonful of loose leaf. This is because we use the same tea leaf in our products and we measure the caffeine levels too.Not all caffeinated drinks are so precise however, and many others don't use the entire tea leaf - they may use the bud and/or stalk too, which impacts the caffeine levels. Finally, the preparation method also impacts how much caffeine enters your cup. For example, if you drink matcha green tea, you are consuming 100% of the caffeine in the tea leaves, while with standard tea you are relying on that caffeine infusing into the water over time.
Are caffeinated teas healthy?
Yes, drinking tea in moderation is healthy... even with our high caffeine content. Tea leaves from the Camellia sinensis tea plant, which includes black, green and white teas, also contain a range of antioxidants and amino acids. These have proven health benefits - check out our blog to learn more about those.Drinking tea can become unhealthy if you overdo the caffeine consumption, whether it's traditional tea or another caffeinated tea like yerba mate. Herbal teas don't contain caffeine, but like any food or drink, it's always good to consume in moderation.
Can you drink too much caffeine?
The amount of caffeine you can safely consume depends on your caffeine sensitivity. The FDA recommends consuming no more than 400mg of caffeine per day, which may be a sensible amount if you're accustomed to a few cups of coffee each day! For others, this may seem like far too much. Some particular tea types are higher in caffeine than others, although all teas made from Camellia sinensis tea plants provide some amount of caffeine.Tea drinkers choosing high caffeine teas can consume up to 150mg of caffeine per serving, to provide a great energy boost without going over the FDA recommended limit.Other teas made from the Camellia sinensis plant, like shade grown green teas used to make matcha, are also high in caffeine... but not as high as Zest!
